In some ways, East Putney resembles the bits of Putney that were left over when every other ward in the area had been drawn.  Although it is a district that has its own tube station, it sprawls far wider than many of its residents might regard as East Putney.

This ward stretches up and across Putney Hill, into Southfields and West Hill, almost reaching the borough boundary with  Richmond, almost reaching Wandsworth town.

It is bisected by the District line as it branches towards Wimbledon - this is a fairly significant physical boundary and the sections either side of it are fairly different in character.

To the western (Putney Hill) side, there are many more fairly modern mansion blocks, particularly on the Hill itself and Carlton Drive. On the eastern (West Hill) side, there is much more terraced housing.

Some of the landmarks in East Putney include Putney tennis club between Balmuir and Carmalt Gardens, Putney High Girls School, the Ashcroft Academy(formerly ADT College) in West Hill and the South Thames College campus on Putney Hill.

Around 60% of all housing in this ward is owner occupied - a huge amount, far larger  than West Putney, which might be thought to be similar to its eastern twin.

A further 24% is privately rented, presumably concentrated in the aforementioned mansion blocks. There is a sprinkling of council estates in the ward: the Lower Ashburton which lies between Westleigh and Chartfield Avenues, and the slightly smaller Strathan Close, Kersfield Road, Portinscale and Longstaff estates off West Hill along with some infill blocks in places like Carlton Drive.
